Sharing and rewarding medallions is a unique and important recovery tradition. This originated in the 1940’s when some Alcoholics Anonymous groups began presenting poker chips of different colors to members in recognition of important sobriety anniversaries.
Later, in the 1950’s and 60’s, lapel pins with Roman numerals designating years of sobriety gained popularity. And then, in the 1970’s, a tool and die maker--appropriately named Bill W.—fashioned a bronze metal that inspired the myriad recovery medallions popular today.
