Drug Paraphernalia What to look for
How would I know if I found Drug Paraphernalia? I
never did Drugs How do I Identify Drug Paraphernalia if I see it?
These are questions
that many parents ask themselves when the suspect that their child or a loved one
is using drugs. Many times Drug Paraphernalia is home made from common house hold
items and other times Drug Paraphernalia is bought in Head Shops or on the
Internet via mail order.
Parents, The
Anti-Drug
You are
your child's best first defense. When your child is going out always ask for all of the
details. Where are you going, With Who, How are you getting there, What time are you
coming home, How are you getting back home, How can I contact you in case of an emergency? |
| If your child tries to
make you feel guilty that you are being nosey or butting into their business don't buy
into it! Until
they reach legal age you are responsible for them and if you love and care about your
child it is your business whether or not they are experimenting with drugs or sex. |

| It is much
easier to correct a problem such as a teenager starting to experiment with weekend
marijuana use and drinking by having an intervention rather than to try and correct the
problem when they are a full blown heroin or cocaine addict due to denial. Thoughts such
as (not my son, or not my daughter, or my kid would never do that, or don't worry it's
just a phase.) This is the kind of thinking that promotes substance abuse. Prevention and
early detection are the key.
Drug
symptoms can sometimes be subtle in the early stages. When your children return home from
going out have a short talk with them face to face to look for substance abuse symptoms.

| Ask them how their
evening was etc. pay attention to the following. Look, Listen, and Smell.
Look: Are their eyes bloodshot, glassy,
dilated pupils, pin point pupils? Do they look nervous, shaky, drowsy, paranoid, excessive
perspiration, powder around nostrils, bruising or needle marks, |

| (arms,
behind knee, between fingers and toes, groin area, neck, leg, wrist.) traces of glue or
paint on clothing, runny nose, nose bleeds, (Snorting Drugs). Black carbon on
clothes, fingers, lips, teeth, burns on lips, (Crack Cocaine use)
Listen: Is their speech clear, do they have an
over dry mouth, are they talking too fast and excitable, not talking enough or too slowly.
Do they sound sincere about where they have been?
Smell: Can you detect the smell of
Cigarette smoke? burning leaves? (marijuana use) Alcohol? Chemical smell on breath such as
gas, glue or spot remover?
Look for and learn to identify Drug
Paraphernalia. Rolling Papers, Pipes, Bongs, Stems, Syringes, Burnt Spoons, Small Empty

Scales sold as postage scales are used to weigh drugs for distribution mostly, marijuana,
hash, heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine, usually packaged in mini zip lock bags and
small manila envelopes by weight.

Look for burned spoons, missing spoons, matches, surgical
tubing, small envelopes, (mini zip-lock bags, manila envelopes, balloons, cotton balls,
eyedroppers, or insulin syringes.) Smell of burning matches and vinegar odor is produced

| Cocaine
Pipe (Crack Stem, Shooter, Hook-Up)
Sold as a novelty at most party stores small glass tubes
with flower. Addicts remove flower and fill with Choir Boy (dish scrub pad) to smoke
crack. Look for an excessive amount of used and half used butane lighters and calluses or
burns on thumbs and lips. |
