Today is the 36th day I have been methadone free. This
is by far the most difficult challenge of my life. My opinion of methadone
is very negative. I would love to share my story, and I will if you will
hear it. I have grown a hatred for the drug and the doctors who provide it.
As I said 36 days clean. I am still suffering, the mental anguish from a
complete lack of sleep and the most recent development of a rapid heart
beat. 108 beats a minute last time I checked. IS THIS NORMAL at the 5 week
mark? Please , any info would be great.
Thanks Paul 10/2/04
I am not giving up, I live in Windsor , ONT. Who is full of shit ? I
just wanted to know what you experienced in the first 6 weeks of quitting
methadone.
Paul
Paul I felt terrible for at least 6 months I used
to get the chills 6 months later when it was 85 to 90 out. But I did not
give up, That is the key! The side effects finally went away but it took a
long time.
Nick
WOW, I should have read the letters first from
(Cosmic Sailor). I know these docs are unscrupulous pieces of shit. I
left the program on my own and not once was after care or detox discussed
with me. They just took my money! If I told you what I was taking to go on
methadone, you would either laugh at me or tell me I am crazy. I was
ill-informed and now I feel ill prepared for the length of time it takes to
withdrawal. I want to fucking sleep. Are you still in Michigan? Attending
NA? Thanks for the letters, I truly appreciate them. It tells me the story.
Thanks Paul

doctor in Italy
Dear friend,
am glad you are doing well, since I am a doctor and
no such thing is important for me as to hear people
are in good health. Something must have gone wrong
with treatments you underwent, or you are the first
ex-addict to have experienced actual trouble with
methadone itself.
I agree that 120 may be not enough
to stop craving for heroin, but such a dose is what I
(we) rate as average. We use the drug at doses up to
800 mg, which is not frequent but possible, and no
difference is there between a 500-taker and a
20-taker. The only possible difference is that the
lower you are on methadone, the more you are engaged
into drug use.
This is proven beyond my and your
personal experience. I am afraid that you use
addiction and dependence as synonyms, whereas I have
not seen anyone craving for a methadone "high", maybe
be afraid of withdrawing or running out of methadone
supplies. Addicts usually dislike methadone, do not
insist on dose increasing, and ask to taper it as soon
as possible, when they do not attempt it roughly on
their own. It is, believe me, uncommon that someone
who is given methadone is sedated, unless an overdose
has happened, or a combination between methadone and
alcohol or sedatives is made. No methadone zombies
ever seen here in Italy, despite adverse propaganda. I
agree there are methadone +
heroin zombies, who are as
such because of ongoing narcotic or sedative use,
rather than because of methadone. Maybe you were
overloaded at the beginning of your treatment, or
given higher doses than necessary, but you should have
developed tolerance to it anyway through time.
However, almost all addicts who had a negative idea of
methadone because of claimed past intolerance,
eventually did benefit from it when treatment was
conducted in an appropriate way, and were thankful to
our equipe. On the other hand, a lot of people who
have no insight on their disease, rate themselves as
out of it as far as they are off methadone, but
neglect to see any risk of relapse. In other words,
before relapsing they actually feel reborn and free of
useless therapies.
I respect your opinion, but your story should be told
in scientific terms, because it is scientifically
exceptional. What you cannot say is that methadone is
ineffective and harmful, because some millions of
addicts are alive and well thanks to a methadone-based
treatment.
Regards,
A doctor from Italy (Cosmic Sailor) wrote the article
above. His name says it all, His sails are fully set and he is heading straight up
the Nile River or should I say The "Denial River".
I have been there and done that and long term
dosing and high dosing of Methadone as far as I concerned are not good. If
it was such a good way to get off drugs why did I take Methadone for
over 17 years? I lost 17 years of my life and was a Methadone prisoner for
over 17 years.
As far as I am concerned this is not living, it is
only existing. When I finally got my clean through a treatment center I got
my freedom back. I learned to Scuba dive and have traveled to many exotic
locations because of my decision to quit Methadone and other drugs.
I also learned to do underwater photography and I
am a Master Diver, Dive Control Specialist, and I used to do
commercial diving here in Michigan. This became possible when I put down the
Methadone and drugs.

life after I put down the met and drugs.
