To Be Young |
 |
Youth is a period of
life,
It is a state of mind, an effect of will.
A quality of the imagination, an
emotional intensity,
A victory of courage over timidity.
Of taste of adventure over the love
of comfort,
One does not become old for having
lived a certain number of years.
One becomes old because one has
deserted his ideals.
The years wrinkle the skin;
To renounce one's ideals wrinkles the soul.
Concerns, doubts, fears and despair
are the enemies
that slowly make us bend toward the earth
and become dust before death.
Young is the one who wonders and
marvels.
Like the insatiable child, he asks: "And Next?"
He defies events and finds joy in the game of life.
You are as young as your faith;
As young as your self-confidence;
As young as your hope;
As old as your despondency.
Should one day your heart be bitten
by pessimism
and consumed by cynicism,
May god have pity on the soul of this old person!
You shall remain young as long as
you remain receptive;
Receptive to all that is beautiful, good, and noble;
Receptive to the messages of
nature,
Of man and the Infinite.
