The US Coast Guard Bramble Dock in Port Huron is one of my favorite shore dives in the St. Clair River. This
photograph was taken at the start of the dive at the Coast Guard Cutter
Bramble dock. This is a drift dive that will take us downriver to the YMCA
where there is an easy exit. Getting out before then is next to impossible
due to the fact that from the water to the road it is about a 30 foot
climb almost straight up. Try that little mountain climbing stunt with a
drysuit and full scuba gear one time and the next time you'll be sure to
go all the way to the exit. I learned this the hard way, from experience.
This dive will take us past the wreck of the Colburn and
next to a large depression that is loaded with logs and tons of walleye on
to a steam powered crane with about a 50' boom that is mounted on crawler
tracks and lying on it's side. An Old Timer from Port Huron told me that
the crane was on a barge working and got stuck in gear and drove right off
the barge with the operator riding it to the bottom in 32' of water. He
swam back to the surface and survived but that was the end of the crane.
Shortly after the leaving the crane is an antique car sitting upright on
the bottom that is about 30 feet further out from the tip of the crane.
When leaving from the car we continue drifting on downriver as we keep
swimming hard to our right (east), this course will bring us up right by
the YMCA.
