7/25/03 A 28-year-old Port Huron man drowned Thursday afternoon after diving
into the St. Clair River along the city's Thomas Edison Parkway.
An anonymous young man
jumped in at about 5:30 p.m. for a quick swim while a friend walked along the
boardwalk next to him, Port Huron police said.
After coming up to one of the ladders along the boardwalk and
talking briefly with his friend, Williams swam out, then came back calling for help,
Lt. Dennis Maurey said.
It's believed to be the second drowning this year in St. Clair
County.
Port Huron fire Capt. Mike Clark said Williams' body was
underwater for 19 minutes before it was recovered.
The St. Clair County Sheriff Department dive team recovered the
body.
Williams was taken to Port Huron Hospital, where he was pronounced
dead.
Maurey said foul play is not suspected, and the death is being
ruled an accidental drowning.
"The water was pretty calm when I went to work, but the St. Clair
River can be treacherous," he said.
