Entrance to Jellyfish Lake
- One of the most unusual dives was Jellyfish Lake.
On this island marine lakes have formed and have been cut off from their ocean source by
the uplifting of ancient coral reefs. The lakes contain a high concentration of sulfur and
are home to isolated groups of Jellyfish who have lost the ability to sting over thousands
of years.
|
- The Jellyfish in the lake now depend on a symbiotic
relationship for survival--the algae living within their gelatinous walls uses the
sunlight to produce food through photosynthesis. These Jellyfish migrate from the deep
darkness of the lake to the bright surface daily to aid in food production.
