The incident
occurred on July, 7 1934. And although the monarch was able to right herself, it had taken
on too much and sank stern first in about 50 feet of water. Four men lost their lives in
that disaster.
The Monarch is located on the Canadian side of the river
just south of the Blue Water Bridge. The Monarch's hull is intact and hatches have been
removed for easy access to the interior. The ship lies on it's starboard side with the bow
pointing upstream.
Some parts of this wreck can have strong currents on some
days. This wreck is accessible by parking near a navigation light next to an old
warehouse. Look for steel stairs and a steel cable in about 12 ft of water that guides
divers to the wreck.
